Website Content - Getting Your Message Across
by Frank Okun,

Attract Your Visitor
The content on your website mainly consists of graphics and text placed together in such a way as to be attractive to your potential customers. The main objective of any website’s content is to convert visitors to take further action or to make a purchase. An example of conversion would be for the visitor to click on a link that would take them to the next step in either the reading process, ordering process, or sales process. In order for your website to have a good conversion rate, you must have good content on your site.

The First Step: Keywords and Keyword Phrases
As mentioned in the article on keywords, search engines play an important role in bringing new traffic, or visitors, to your website. Search engine “spiders” probe your website for relevant keywords and keyword phrases - relevant to a person’s search terms which they type in the search engine’s “search” bar, and relevant to your topic. Choosing the best keywords and keyword phrases before writing the text content of each page is the most important step in creating effective web pages. Focused Content Pages (FCP)
The text content of each page should be specific to a particular subject, product or service and should be written to be directed at one person, just as this page is directed to you. You’ll want to be convincing in your message or product explanations, especially if your website is sales oriented.
Most pages should contain about 300 to 500 words on an average. Pages that are too short in content are not very effective or as search engine friendly. Pages that have too much content can leave your visitor confused or bored. Remember, you want them to take action.

Graphics
Search engines don’t consider the graphics themselves in indexing your website. However, search engine spiders do read the alternate text tag along with the source code in indexing your web pages. This alternate or “alt” text is visible when you drag your curser over a picture on any web page. Flash intro pages are also considered to be graphics, and have little or no interest as far as the search engines are concerned. Relevant Links Links are important as they direct your visitor to take further action. Search engines also view the link popularity of your website as a factor in your page rank. Obviously, internal links are used for navigation through your site, and external links should be placed in such a way as to not “interrupt” your conversion process. This is why you will see many websites offering a “Links” or “Resources” page for external links. Unless an external link has relevance to a specific page, it should be considered only for the links or resource pages. For more information about links, click here.
